Homework and practice to me go right along with the behaviorist theory. We teach our students in class something during the day. What do we do? we send them home with work to practice what they have learned. We are reinforcing what they learned from the day. just like what behaviorist theory says. Reinforce positives and try to stay away from punishment. Get to reinforcement first so you do not need punishment. Same thing with reinforcing effort. As a teacher, you need to make sure your students are giving all their effort. Make sure they are doing all of their homework problems for practice. Giving all their efforts in school. Maybe I am missing something but I do see how they work in similar ways.
Until next time, keep it real homies!

I love the concepts of reinforcement in the classroom, and I feel if we are not utilizing this theory, we are putting our students at a huge disadvantage, whether it be reinforcing the learning in class with homework, classwork, groupwork, or any other means of assessment. I do, however, find it quite difficult to only follow the ideas of reinforcement. It is a given that all students are going to learn differently, and if we aren't meeting the certain needs of students, this sometimes may lead to student behavioral issues that seem to only be handled with discipline and consequences. This is why we, as educators, must strategize our lessons and reinforcing activities to allow our widely diverse students the equal oppurtunity to succeed.
ReplyDeleteI feel if we do not assign some type of practice then what we have taught in the classroom can be easily forgotten. I believe positive reinforcement in the classroom is a must. Students need to feel that we value their hard work and dedication. I teach high school and am surprised that a comment, a smiley face, or a sticker gets such a positive reaction from students. I think we get so caught up in planning the perfect lesson that we forget to tell students or show them that we appreciate their hard work!
