GAME PLAN!

One of my goals would be promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness (NETS-T 1a).  My other goal would be to engage students in exploring real-world issues and solving authentic problems using digital tools and resources ( NETS-T 1b).  I found both of my goals from the web site International Society for Technology in Education, 2008. (http://www.iste.org/standards/nets-for-teachers/nets-for-teachers-2008.aspx)
To achieve my both of my goals I am going to have to continue putting forth a 100 percent effort in teaching my children about technology.  By doing this, I will be modeling to my students innovative thinking and inventiveness.  I will continue to promote student learning and creativity using technology.    It will show the students I care and hopefully open their minds up to a whole new creative way of learning.  My second goal I will have to keep up on current events in the local area/news.  Give the students a chance to speak up about a topic and use technology to their advantage.
I will incorporate as many people as possible.  This will allow me to open up the horizons on topics for the students.  Stay up to date on materials.  The fresher the information the better.  Monitor my classroom blogs every night.  Answer questions when needed.
I can evaluate the whole way through the assignment.  If I evaluate and stay supportive the students will be engaged and willing to be creative.  Only when their project is done will it be easy to evaluate their findings and inventiveness because I was evaluating the students the entire way through the assignment.

Until Next Time, Keep It Real Homies!

  1. I like the idea of using technology to explore real-world situation. In today's society, students for the most part only go off of what they hear parents, guardians, etc. say about a topic rather than researching and reading for themselves. One instance is here in Wisconsin and what our Governor is trying to do. Many of my students either have no idea of what is happening and how it will effect them or they just go off what they hear from adults in their lives. I think if students are given the opportunity to research it themselves, they will be allowed to form their own opinion. Good luck with your GAME plan.

  2. I think it is important to keep students involved in the happenings of the real world. I think you will gain some great perspectives as you collaborate with a blog. I'm curious as to how you use blogging with your students. Do you give them specific questions weekly/daily? Do they answer your blog or do they each have their own? Keeping up to date can be a challenge, what are some of your favorite sites that you and your students use? I'm looking to try out some blogging with some 5th grade students and I'm in search of advice!

  3. Hi Joe,
I enjoyed your posting. As Carrie and Kathy share, I think it is a real advantage for students to get used to keeping abreast of current events. Sometimes students get so involved in their own worlds that they forget about what is going on in the world around them.

With online news sources, they can stay informed--and blogs, wikis, and related communication tools can allow them to share their opinions. I find that when students have a voice to share with others, they are more invested in current events. This is a nice way to encourage investment--as responsible 21st century adults they will need to keep abreast of current events.

  4. I also feel it is so important for students to be exposed to current events. With today's technology it makes them so much more real. For example, the pictures and videos of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan yesterday. Never before has something like that seemed so real to me. We actually saw it in action and just how forceful and devastating it was. We can learn so much from that and it would also help to give the kids a sense of empathy and even get creative with ways that they might help out. Unfortunately our media seems to spend way too much time on current events such as Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan. So, as teachers, we need to direct our students to the appropriate current events that foster learning.

  5. I use to watch a TV show called "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper". You're blog title made me think of it.

But onto your post -- I too wanted to work on those 2 topics. I feel like students must be aware of what's going on in the real world and be able to think critically. One idea that someone suggested was using a news website to find an article that students could read and comment on. Just doing this once a week may open students eyes to the bigger picture. Life is more than just their friends on facebook.
